OpenAI Board Fires Sam Altman as CEO

Board cited lack of consistent candor in communication and loss of confidence

OpenAI has announced the termination of Sam Altman as its CEO in an unexpected move.

The company said in its blog post:

“Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities… The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

The decision, made following a thorough review by the board, cited Altman's lack of consistent candor in communications with the board as a hindrance to their responsibilities, leading to a loss of confidence in his leadership abilities.

In response to Altman's dismissal, Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer, has been appointed as the interim CEO, effective immediately. The company plans to initiate a search for a permanent successor to the CEO position.

Altman expressed his sentiments on his departure via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating his affection for his time at OpenAI and hinting at future announcements.

This development comes as a significant and abrupt change, considering Altman's prominent role as the face of OpenAI, notably contributing to the AI arms race with the release of ChatGPT. Just last week, Altman led the keynote at the inaugural DevDay conference, unveiling substantial updates to compete with major tech companies.

Additionally, the co-founder of OpenAI, Greg Brockman, is stepping down as the chairman of the board but will continue his association with the company. Altman, a co-founder alongside Elon Musk, who left in 2018, has played a pivotal role in OpenAI's journey, leaving an indelible mark on the organization.

Update November 17th, 4:50PM ET: Added X post from Altman.
